Greetings from the CEO- Dennis Shelby
Wilson Medical Center (WMC) considers it an honor to have served Southeast Kansas since 1916. The mission of the hospital's Board of Trustees was to prepare WMC for continuation of quality healthcare services into the twenty-first century and beyond. We are committed to providing quality care, stability, and meeting the healthcare needs of the area we serve.
At a time when we hear about the closure of rural hospitals around the nation, we feel fortunate to be expanding our outreach and growth in Wilson and Montgomery Counties. As the nearest hospital to Cherryvale and Independence, we feel a strong obligation to meet as many medical needs as possible for these communities. Stability of primary care was an area we felt we could help provide in both Cherryvale and Independence. We are pleased that the Cherryvale Clinic known as Cherryvale Family Medicine and owned by Wilson Medical Center was able to continue care in 2016 with both, providers, Marc Hoffmeister and Davia Knight. Our expansion and growth in Cherryvale, and Independence will help secure our viability as a rural hospital in the region. I value the input from our sister communities on needed programs and services and request feedback on the quality of service we deliver. It is important to hear from our patients and families about the quality of care received. I personally respond to every compliment and concern.
With the mission to improve and restore health, WMC is always looking for beneficial new services. Because of the number of diabetic wound patients seen in our Regional Wound and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, we saw a need to provide the area with a Certified Diabetes Educator. WMC now has a Certified Diabetes Management Center accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and classes have begun this July.
Another service WMC is able to provide is oncology. We were willing to assist the Cancer Center of Kansas in expanding their care with chemotherapy infusion treatments and an oncology clinic that began in January 2016.
Services WMC will be providing in the near future is telemedicine specialty care. Physicians will be able to refer patients to telemedicine specialists in dermatology, endocrinology, and rheumatology. These specialists rarely want to travel to rural areas, but through telemedicine, WMC is able to bring them here so the patients and/or their family do not have to travel.
I greatly appreciate our staff for accepting the challenges that came from the increased business due to the closure of Mercy. It takes a team of professionals, physicians, and support departments to give the compassionate, quality care that makes a difference in the lives we treat.
With the forces shaping the changes in community healthcare, I encourage you to find trusted partners who can provide and address the healthcare solutions best suited for you. If anyone has questions regarding Wilson Medical Center, physicians serving WMC, or would like to tour the hospital, please call 620-325-8369.
